Rusty Flight

02-07-2013

For those of you who read My Logbook page, you will notice that I haven't flown since January 12. Winter weather is not always the best to fly in and I also was sick and unable to fly. I finally found the opportunity to fly for the first time in almost a month. Naturally, I was a little rusty. I made a very careful preflight of the airplane, checking for any abnormalities.

I aced my crosswind takeoff from runway 14 and flew to the practice area. First we practiced steep turns. Steep turns aren't my favorite because it's difficult for me to hold my altitude. I don't feel the sensation of the nose dropping or rising.

We then practiced slow flight. I was pleased with how good i did. I hadn't done it in awhile so I was surprised. Then we did both power-off and departure stalls. I liked these as well. We also practiced stalls in turn and I was happy with these as well.

Then, we flew to the Hillsdale Airport (JYM) to practice some takeoffs and landings on ruwnay 10. These weren't terrible but I really need to work on my crosswind landings. We departed and headed back to JXN. On the way in, I managed to successfully practice some turns around a point.

We entered some right traffic for 14 and practiced some more landings. These were a mixture of power-off, power-on, and 0-flap landings. Once we landed full stop, I realized how tired I was. I had aches in my muscles and was very frustrated with the quality of my landings just before. We got a total of 2.2 hours in but they were well needed. Being a student pilot, going more than 2 weeks without training can really allow you to forget things.
